General Visa Guidelines for all Countries

Visa is the most crucial document for a traveller as it is the only document which can make your travel plans.
  1. Documentation: You will need clear documentation while you apply for a visa. Your passport is the most important document you will need. Make sure that your passport is valid for six months post your travel dates. If your passport is about to expire immediately, your chances of getting a visa are almost nil. Many countries will also ask you to come for an interview or to provide your biometrics.
  2. Start at the beginning: You need to be clear about your travel dates. Almost all the consulates will ask you to submit your travel dates.
  3. You still need to apply for a visa at least one month in advance. You need to remember that each country has its own procedure and time frame for visa clearance. So make sure that you have enough time on hand just in case the consulate asks for additional documentation. While a Schengen visa may take only a week or so, a visa to Canada takes up to 35-40 working days.
  4. If you are applying for a tourist visa, you will need to show your personal financial records along with your itinerary, Travel Insurance , accommodation, etc.
  5. A business visa, on the other hand, will require an invitation from the counterpart and you will need to furnish your company records, along with a company letter for the same.
  6. While applying for a student visa, you will need to show your college admission documents along with your financials. One of the major requirements for a student visa is student travel insurance.
  7.  A point to remember is that if the consulate feels that they need further documentation, they will send you an intimation asking for additional details. You can read through a checklist of common documents that are a must for applying for a visa to any country on our blog.
The following checklist of common documents is a must for applying (or getting) visa to any country:
  1. Passport (current and old)
  2. Passport size photographs (at least 2)
  3. Birth Certificate (with name of both parents)
  4. Visa forms from the respective consulates
  5. Purpose of visit
  6. Financial Documents (Bank Statements/ Taxation Documents)
  7. Marriage Certificate (if applicable)
  8. Professional and academic documents.
So, keep these things in mind and plan your well in advance to avoid last minute complications and hassles.

What are the Different Types of Visas You Can Avail of?

Well, what are visas essentially?

They are documents issued by a government granting permission to foreigners looking to visit the respective country. Unlike passports that act as proof of your country of origin, visas are markers that state the period for which you will be allowed to remain in the foreign country.

Now, various countries have put forth different types of regulations regarding their visa process. A table illustrates the following:

Type of Visa

What Does it Imply?

Visa-free

Visa-free travel is the benefit where you can visit a country without having to obtain a visa. This is applicable if the two countries in question have an agreement for the same, or if the country one is visiting has unilaterally opened its borders to foreign nationals.

Visa-on-Arrival

Also known as an on-arrival visa, these are granted to a visitor at the port of entry. The entire process of issuing the visa is initiated and completed at the port of entry by government authorities.

e-Visa

E-Visas are, in essence, official documents issued online by a country’s immigration official that grants visitors permission to enter it. These are an alternative to the regular paper-based visas that a country’s embassy issues.

Entry Permit

Countries issue entry permits to their visitors instead of visas. These entry permits are documents that allow foreigners to enter and stay in the country legally for a certain period.

FAQs about Visa-Free Countries for Indians

No, visa-free entry may vary depending on the type of passport held by the Indian citizen. For example, diplomatic and official passport holders may have different entry requirements.

When travelling visa-free, you must still carry a valid passport - usually six months after your departure date - and travel insurance as mandated by the country you are visiting. You might also be required to produce proof of onward travel (travel itinerary, flight tickets, etc.), vaccination certificates, etc. Ensure that you pass the minimum eligibility criteria to enter the country.

Though Indian citizens can visit a foreign country visa-free, it does not mean that entry into the country is guaranteed. If you do not meet the minimum entry requirements or the immigration officer suspects you for any reason, your entry into the country can be denied.

No, visa-free countries have a limited number of days where visitors can stay without a visa. Since this duration varies for each country, it is important to check the entry requirements of each country before travelling.

No, visa-free entry is usually only for tourism or short-term visits. If Indians want to work or study in these countries, they will need to apply for the appropriate visa.

Knowing which countries, you as an Indian, can visit without a visa can help you plan your travels more easily and save time and money on visa applications.

Some of the countries Indians can travel to without a visa may include Mauritius, Maldives, Bhutan, Nepal, Thailand, Indonesia, and Fiji.

Indians can check the visa requirements for a particular country by visiting the website of the country's embassy or consulate in India or by using online visa information services.
