Itinerary

At the airport in Lusaka, your guide will greet you and help you with final preparations for your safari. On the way to your accommodation you will drive through the Zambian capital, one of the fastest growing metropolises in Southern Africa. At the lodge you can first arrive in peace and relax a bit after the long flight. Overnight stay at Sandy's Creation Lodge. (Travel time approx. 1,5h, 40 km).

Sandy's Creations Lodge

Sunset in the Lower Zambezi NP

The first stage begins with the drive from the high plateau down to the impressive Zambezi Valley. Your accommodation is located directly on the mighty Zambezi River, which here forms the border to Zimbabwe and the Mana Pools National Park there. Arriving at Mvuu Lodge, you will set up your tented camp on the grounds. In the late afternoon a boat game drive with a fantastic sunset over the Zambezi River awaits you. Overnight stay in the tent at the Mvuu Lodge. (Drive time approx. 5h, 220 km).

Hippo in the Lower Zambezi NP

Look forward to first class game viewing on a full day game drive in a four wheel drive vehicle through the Lower Zambezi National Park. The game drive takes place on the valley floor along the river, as the narrow stretch between the escarpment and the river is where most of the animals are found. Thus, huge herds of elephants are often spotted on the banks as well as hippos, waterbucks and buffalos. Overnight stay as on the previous day.

Village children on game drive

In the morning, enjoy the scenery of the Zambezi Valley once again on the way back before returning to civilization. On the way to Lusaka, there is an opportunity to visit Chiawa Primary School and the petrified forest of Chirundu. Overnight stay at Sandy's Creation Lodge. (Drive time approx. 5h, 220 km).

Sitatunga in Kasanka NP

After a very early breakfast, leave the capital and drive north on the "Great North Road" through an important agricultural region of Zambia. Afterwards, the road leads close to the Congolese border to the Kasanka National Park, which is small in area. On the way to the next camp you will enjoy a first game drive in the evening light. With a bit of luck you will spot endemic puku antelopes and the extremely rare endemic sitatunga antelopes, which are perfectly adapted to life on the water. Overnight in a tent at Pontoon Camp. (Travel time approx. 7-8h, 520 km).

Flying foxes leaving for the night

You will explore the unique landscapes of Kasanka National Park. You will be on two half-day game drives each in the park, accompanied by an additional local guide. At sunrise and sunset you can watch the fascinating spectacle of the "Fruit Bat Migration" from wooden observation towers at different locations, when palm fruit bats swarm from their roosting trees at dusk and fly back in at dawn. Every year from mid-October to late November, about 10 million palm fruit bats from the forests of the Congo arrive in Kasanka National Park and settle down for an unbridled feast in the swampy forest along the Musola River. Here, the purely vegetarian flying foxes devote themselves to the great feast of ripened fruits and berries such as mangoes, masuku or water berries. This is the world's highest density of mammalian biomass in one place as well as the largest known migration of mammals on our planet - even before the great wildebeest-zebra migration in Tanzania! Overnight stay as on the previous day.

The road has you back and already at sunrise you will be adventurously heading northeast. The destination of today's drive is the hilly Mutinondo Highlands. After setting up your tented camp on the Mutinondo Wilderness site, you will have time to familiarize yourself with the area and enjoy the beautiful views. The climate up here is pleasant and the landscape is lush green. Overnight stay in tent. (Travel time approx. 4h, 220 km).

Hike in the forest

Today you have a day at leisure in the Mutinondo Highlands. You are welcome to book activities through the nearby lodge, such as a hiking trip, mountain biking or you can go swimming in one of the rivers. There are no dangerous animals here, so you can move freely and the activities are safe. Overnight stay in a tent.

Children in Northern Zambia

A long day of driving takes you back to the capital city of Lusaka. Upon arrival at the lodge, relax in the spacious garden. Overnight stay at Pioneer Lodge. (Drive time approx. 10h, 620 km).

Lion in South Luangwa NP

Transfer to the airport for the flight (approx. 1h) to the South Luangwa National Park, where you will spend the next three days. On the flight to Mfuwe, you can already catch a first glimpse of the meandering Luangwa River. The national park is famous for its high concentration of wildlife. In the afternoon you will go on a first game drive. Besides a large population of elephants, zebras and buffalos, the park also offers endemic species like the Thornicroft giraffe or the Cookson's gnu. Your accommodation is located directly on the Luangwa River, on whose banks unforgettable sunsets await you. Overnight stay at the Wildlife Camp.

Elephants in South Luangwa NP

During the next two days you will experience the Zambian wildlife intensively on the half-day game drives and your guide will do his best to track different animals by, among other things, reading tracks and he will be guided by your interests. There will be plenty of time for extensive photography. The Luangwa Valley offers a bit of everything: riverine landscapes, tree-covered savannahs, palm groves, and prospects for plenty of exciting wildlife encounters. The density of animals near the river and along the tributaries of the Luangwa is unparalleled: elephants, antelopes, giraffes, hippos, zebras, lions, leopards - they are all at home here. You will also spot some of the 400 bird species. Perhaps you will hear the muffled throaty call of the hornbills at dawn, perhaps you will photograph the colorful scarlet spinets in their breeding colonies, perhaps a pronghorned roller will sit patiently modeling. Two overnights as on the previous day.

In the morning there is still time for a last safari in the park. Enjoy the spicy scent of the wilderness in your nose once again! In the afternoon, you will be transferred to Mfuwe airstrip and fly back to Lusaka. Overnight at Pioneer Lodge.

Karminspint in the Lower Zambezi NP

Goodbye Zambia! Your guide will take you to the airport and with a heavy heart you will say goodbye to this dreamlike country.
