Cameron Highlands a hill resort with large tea plantations, farmlands, lakes, waterfalls, wildlife, aborigines. It was discovered by British Geologist Sir William Cameron in 1885. Tea Plantations are instrumental in drawing visitors to the highlands, and they work closely with Nature societies as in WWF in the conservation of our endangered animals. It is wonderful to sip tea perched on an elevated tea café to catch a bird’s eye view of the lush carpet of greenery below. Some rare butterflies, stick insects beetles, scorpions, spiders, snakes can be seen live at the Butterfly Farm. The walk down to marketplace to see variety of vegetables, fruits and flowers grown in the Camerons is exciting. Due to the cool weather, the best selling dinner is “HOT POT”.
Traffic jams in Camerons unavoidable.
Taman Negara is a 130 million years old tropical rainforest, home to endangered animals like Tigers, Elephants, Tapirs, Sun Bears….. 14,000 flowering plants, 300 bird species…medicinal and poisonous plants, not forgetting the aphrodisiacs. The boatman skillfully negotiates 7 sets of rapids to reach an aborigine village where the ladies shy away, children smile and men ‘run’ away only to reappear with their fire making and hunting tools for a ‘native’ demonstration. The rainforest is their supermarket. They also sustain themselves with small farming, fishing, trade medicinal herbs and spices and use blowpipe for small mammals. Taman Negara activities : Canopy Walkway closed Fridays and during bad weather Rapids shooting, Jungle Trekking and the Aborigines village visit. The Night Jingle walk is exciting too as you look for mouse deer, spiders, scorpions, snakes even wild boar and black panther. Our Nature Guide lives in Taman Negara and he knows the terrain very well like the back of his hands.
