An eleven day Bhutan cultural tour which combines both cultural and natural highlights of this heritage rich country. Travelling with your own English speaking driver guide throughout, this tailor made holiday to Bhutan follows the itinerary below but can be adapted, of course, to suit your interests and time frame. However, our aim is to help you explore the diverse landscapes of Bhutan’s western valleys as well as its many monasteries, museums and temples.
Starting in Paro, you have time to take in the sites here such Rinpung Dzong Fortress and Ta Dzong Museum and then head onto the capital city of Thimpu. Spend a couple of days in and around Thimpu with visits to Simtokha Dzong, the oldest fortress of the Kingdom, King’s Memorial Chhorten and Tashichhodzong Monastery.
We then head out of town and over high mountain passes, with views of the Himalayas, into the Phobjikha Valley, also known as Gangtey, a stunning glacial valley with rhododendron covered slopes and pine forests. En route we stop at Wangduephodrang to visit the splendid Wangdue Dzong ruins as well as its traditional market. The Valley itself is famous for its black-necked cranes which come in great numbers between November and March, but is also home to a wide variety of other wildlife.
Our next stop is following another magnificent drive across the 3,300m high Pele La Pass to Trongsa. This is home to the famous Trongsa Dzong, ancestral home of the Royal Family. Equally striking is Bumthang, the name given to the collection of four valleys of Chumey, Choekhor, Tang and Ur and home to some of Bhutan’s oldest temples and monasteries. These include Kurje Lhakhang and Jambay Lhakhang.
Heading back through Thimpu and then Paro as our final stop, we take a day to explore one of Bhutan’s most spectacular sites: Taktsang Monastery which is considered the birthplace of Bhutan Buddhism. And, we hope, a fitting finale to this Bhutan holiday. As well as these cultural and natural highlights, we will also ensure that you will spend plenty of time with local people, enjoying traditional food, visiting markets, learning about Bhutanese life styles and so on.
