UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (UAE) COUNTRY FACTFILE

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federation of seven emirates located in the southeastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, bordering Saudi Arabia to the south and west, and Oman to the southeast. With a population of over 9.5 million, the UAE is a dynamic and cosmopolitan country where expatriates make up approximately 85–90% of the population.

The country’s terrain is mainly desert with vast stretches of sand dunes, oases, and coastal plains, but also features rugged mountains in the east and a long coastline along the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The UAE’s largest natural oasis, Al Ain, lies near the eastern border and is known for its date palms and hot springs.

The capital city is Abu Dhabi, which also serves as the country’s political and economic center. Dubai is the largest city and a global business and tourism hub, renowned for its ultramodern architecture, vibrant nightlife, and world-class shopping. Other significant emirates include Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, and Umm Al Quwain.

The UAE blends traditional Islamic culture with modernity, and is known for hosting grand architectural feats like the Burj Khalifa, Palm Jumeirah, and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Despite being one of the world’s top oil producers, the UAE has diversified its economy into tourism, finance, real estate, and technology as part of its Vision 2030 strategy.

The climate is desert-like with extremely hot summers and mild winters. The best time to visit the UAE is from November to March, when the weather is cooler and more conducive to sightseeing and outdoor activities.

WEATHER AND BEST TIME TO VISIT
The UAE experiences a hot desert climate, with scorching summers and warm, sunny winters. From May to September, daytime temperatures often exceed 45°C (113°F), and humidity can be intense, especially along the coast. Sandstorms and dusty conditions are also common during these months.

The most pleasant time to visit is from November to March, when daytime temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F) and evenings are cooler. This season is ideal for outdoor festivals, desert excursions, and beach activities. Rain is rare but occasional showers may occur during winter, especially in the northern emirates.

HOW TO REACH
The UAE is one of the most well-connected countries in the Middle East and serves as a major international transit hub.

By Air: The UAE has several international airports. Dubai International Airport (DXB) is among the world’s busiest, and Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) and Sharjah International Airport (SHJ) also receive significant international traffic. Airlines such as Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Air Arabia offer extensive global connections.

By Land: Road travel from Oman and Saudi Arabia is possible via several border checkpoints. Travelers entering by land must ensure valid visas and documentation.

By Sea: Cruise ships dock at major ports like Dubai Cruise Terminal, Abu Dhabi Port, and Port Rashid. Yachts and ferries also operate in certain coastal areas.

Domestic Travel: The UAE has a strong road network. Domestic flights, intercity buses, taxis, and metro systems offer easy transport between and within emirates.

LOCAL TRANSPORTATION
The UAE has a modern and efficient transportation infrastructure, especially in major cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

1. Metro: The Dubai Metro is clean, fast, and connects major attractions and business areas. Abu Dhabi is planning its own metro network.
2. Buses: Public buses are air-conditioned, frequent, and affordable in all emirates.
3. Taxis: Widely available and reasonably priced, taxis are a preferred option for locals and tourists. Pink-roof taxis in Dubai are driven by women for women.
4. Ride-hailing Apps: Uber and Careem are widely used, and local apps like Hala and Abu Dhabi Taxi are also popular.
5. Car Rentals: Available at airports and in all cities; the UAE has excellent roadways for driving.
6. Water Transport: Dubai operates abras (water taxis), ferries, and yachts for scenic and practical transport across its waterways.

Public transportation is safe, clean, and convenient throughout the UAE.

FOOD AND DRINKS, NIGHTLIFE
The UAE offers a rich culinary landscape influenced by Middle Eastern, Indian, Persian, Levantine, and international cuisines. Emirati dishes such as machboos, harees, and grilled meats are widely enjoyed alongside global fare. Fresh dates, Arabic coffee, and rich desserts like luqaimat are also local favorites.

Restaurants range from Michelin-starred establishments to traditional street food vendors. Alcohol is served in licensed hotel bars and restaurants, and some emirates permit alcohol stores for residents with permits.

Nightlife in the UAE is vibrant, especially in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Rooftop lounges, beach clubs, dance venues, and live music bars are popular among tourists. However, public drunkenness is not tolerated and is punishable by law.

VISA RULES
The UAE offers visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to citizens of over 60 countries, including the US, UK, EU nations, Australia, and several Asian countries. Tourist visas for other nationalities can be applied online or through airlines, travel agencies, or UAE embassies.

Tourist visas typically allow stays of 30 to 90 days, depending on nationality. Overstaying can result in fines. Always check the UAE Government Portal or embassy website for updated visa rules.

SAFETY
The UAE is one of the safest countries in the world, with an extremely low crime rate. Violent crime is rare, and petty crime such as pickpocketing is minimal. Strict laws ensure high levels of public order.

However, visitors should be respectful of local customs and Islamic laws. Public intoxication, offensive gestures, or inappropriate dress can lead to fines or detention.

Health facilities are world-class. It is advisable to drink bottled water and avoid extreme sun exposure during summer.

DO’S AND DON’TS
Do’s:

1. Dress modestly in public, especially in religious or conservative areas.
2. Show respect during the call to prayer and during the holy month of Ramadan.
3. Greet locals with polite phrases like “As-salamu alaykum.”
4. Use your right hand for eating and giving items.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE AND CUSTOMS ALLOWANCE
The official currency is the UAE Dirham (AED). Currency exchange services are widely available in malls, airports, and business districts. Credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere.

Customs Allowance:

• Up to 4 liters of alcohol (for non-Muslims)
• 400 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 500 grams of tobacco
• Goods worth up to AED 3,000 for personal use
• Cash amounts over AED 60,000 must be declared

Prohibited items include drugs, e-cigarettes with nicotine (without prescription), items offensive to Islamic morals, and counterfeit goods.

AMENITIES: WATER, ELECTRICITY, INTERNET, TELEPHONE IN UAE
Water: Tap water in the UAE is generally desalinated and safe for brushing teeth and bathing. Bottled water is recommended for drinking.

Electricity: Voltage is 220V-240V, 50Hz. Type G (three-prong) British plugs are standard. Carry a universal adapter if needed.

Internet: High-speed internet and free Wi-Fi are widely available in hotels, malls, and public areas. The UAE has one of the highest internet penetration rates in the region.

Telephone: Etisalat and du are the two main telecom providers. Local SIM cards are available at the airport with prepaid options. International calling is also available through apps and calling cards.
